Our research examines the sources, distribution, and characteristics of microplastics in Alaska’s freshwater and coastal environments. Through structured field sampling and laboratory analysis, including microscopy and spectroscopic identification, we identify and characterize microplastics across diverse aquatic systems. By focusing on northern and cold-region environments, this work advances understanding of contaminant behavior in understudied settings and considers how changes in water quality may influence ecosystem health, wildlife, and the communities connected to these waters. Our goal is to generate rigorous data that clarifies the pathways and implications of microplastics in Arctic and subarctic systems.
